The First Olympic Village
Olympic Village Inn California began life as the first dormitory for Olympic athletes. Prior to the 1960 Winter Olympics, the athletes stayed in area hotels or with families who lived near the Games. However, Squaw Valley (as Olympic Valley was then known) had no hotels and only one permanent resident. Thus, the world’s first Olympic Village was constructed to house the Olympians.
Other Historic Firsts
The 1960 Winter Olympics claimed a few other historic firsts, as well. Olympic Valley, CA, was the first Olympic host to receive federal funding to build its facilities. Through this funding, the 1960 Winter Olympics was also the first Games to use emerging technologies like artificial ice and a result-tabulating computer developed by IBM. Moreover, in addition to being the first Winter Olympics to be televised live, the 1960 Games was essentially responsible for the invention of instant replay. When an official was unsure about a men’s slalom run, they asked the broadcaster, CBS, to play back their footage, and the instant replay was born.
The Olympic Village Inn is Born
In the late 70’s, developer Phil Carville bought a 100-acre parcel of Olympic Valley in pursuit of a grand development plan. As part of that plan, he gutted and revamped the historic Olympic Village dormitories, turning them from an ascetic relic of the past into inviting, luxurious timeshare condos. The project wrapped in 1981, and the aptly named Olympic Village Inn opened to the world. In 2019, Grand Pacific Resorts bought the Inn and added it to their portfolio of more than 20 world-class resorts.

Amenities at the Olympic Village Inn
If you’d like to warm up after a long day on the slopes, the Olympic Village Inn has you covered. The resort features a large heated pool and multiple hot tub areas to relax in. While most accommodations in other resorts go by titles like “one-bedroom, two-bedroom,” etc., the suites at the Olympic Village Inn are called “Kitzbuhel” and “Chamonix.” Fun fact: these are the names of legendary ski resorts in Austria and France, respectively. It’s safe to say these suites live up to their namesakes!
The Kitzbuhel suite has an individual bedroom, a separate living room, and a kitchenette. This deluxe condo suite has a bed and a sofa bed, both of which are queen-sized. Additionally, the Kitzbuhel has a furnished private balcony so you can take in the gorgeous vistas of the Olympic Valley.
As for the Chamonix, this suite has all the same features as the Kitzbuhel but with more space. To be specific, the Kitzbuhel is 375 square feet, while the Kitzbuhel offers 650 square feet to stretch your legs in. This suite also comes with a wood-burning fireplace.
